Since we live in the Southern Hemisphere, it is a mid-spring festival. The main activity is making and eating moon cakes and BBQ with family has become very popular in Taiwan. The weather is normally quite warm still, it is also an official holiday. Family members often travel home to spend time with their family, have a BBQ, or dinner, then have moon cakes as desert. Historically, moon cakes helped to start the revolt against Mongols and the Han Chinese put the meeting time sheet inside moon cakes. These cakes were sent to all the households in the city, and because Mongols don't eat moon cakes, they didn't know about the revolt. A revolution ensued, and the rest is as we say, history. The Han Chinese started Ming Dynasty after years of revolution that drove the Mongols north again. However, the Mongols have left their mark all over the world, conquering all of Asia and reached Italy. As a race, we are called Mongolians even though we have no Mongolian blood inside of us. Another mythical story about this festival is Chong-Er. Chong-Er is the wife of Ho-Yi, a hero who shot down the eight suns in the sky. Cut a long story short, Ho-Yi got in his head that he is so heroic that he should become immortal. He obtained two magical pills, one for himself, and one for his wife. They will rule China forever. His wife Chong-Er was very worried so she took both pills herself. Unbeknown to her, these two pills carried her up into the sky, getting lighter and lighter. She flew to the Moon. Chinese commemorate her courage by celebrating Moon Festival, Ho-Yi didn't become immortal, and Chong-Er lives in the Moon until today.
